Members of district 16, along with members of district 17 and Lake Harmony EMS participated in a confined space / building collapse training session. Personal Protection Equipment Specialists provided the departments the training trailer, and was paid for in part by a grant program. In the morning rescuers were given an introduction to the trailer and were sent through a maze on the first floor that included dark conditions, very tight hallways and openings and ropes suspended from the ceiling that simulated members becoming entangled in wires. Then in the afternoon rescuers were pitted against a very labor intensive building collapse simulation . Rescuers were given the task of entering the building through some very small voids and openings in wall to find almost 2 tons of debris including collapsed ceilings that had to be lifted using air bags, and then cribbed. It took rescuers about 3 hours and almost 40 scba cylinders to successfully reach a trapped victim and to extricate him from the building. Everyone involved did an excellent and professional job, and hopefully we will have the opportunity utilize this trailer more in the future.
